Trinidadians vote today – CARICOM Observer Mission to monitor

The people of Trinidad and Tobago vote in general elections today, Monday 7 September 2015.

The Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) said just over 1.09 million people are eligible to cast ballots  and that there are more than 2000 polling stations scattered across the two islands.

The polling stations opened at 6:00 this morning and will close at 6:00 this evening. Results should be known late tonight.

The twelve-member CARICOM Elections Observation Mission is monitoring today’s elections day process.  In addition to observing this morning’s Opening of the Polls, Members will closely follow the  Voting, Close of Poll and Tallying of the ballots in at least 20 of the 41 constituencies.

The Mission which began arriving in Trinidad and Tobago on September first, has been meeting with representatives of political parties and other relevant institutions and held a Press Conference on Saturday.

At the end of today’s poll the Mission will issue a Preliminary Statement based on its observations to be followed later by a full report to CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque.

The CARICOM Observation Mission is headed by Mr. Orrette Fisher, Director of Elections, Electoral Commission of Jamaica. He is assisted by the Deputy Chief of Mission, Ms. Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer, Department of Elections and Boundaries of Belize. The other members of the Mission include experts in Electoral Management and Administration from Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname. They are accompanied by a two-member CARICOM Secretariat Support team.
