COHSOD focuses on education, children

Jul 15, 2015

The Twenty-Seventh Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) will focus its discussions on education and children when it convenes tomorrow at the CARICOM Secretariat.  The theme of the two-day meeting is ‘Safeguarding our Region’s future, reshaping education for the Twenty-First century”.

The main objective of the Meeting is to provide an opportunity for Ministers responsible for Education and Children’s Issues, to discuss perspectives and provide directions on the major issues related to the development of the proposed 2030 CARICOM Strategy for Education and Human Resource Development. The COHSOD will also focus on monitoring and evaluating progress in child development and protection under the Regional Framework for Action on Children (2001–2015) and the articulation of a Regional Post 2015 Agenda for Children.

The Council will examine the issue of teenage pregnancy in CARICOM Member States and assess strategies to deal with this matter. The work of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) will also be discussed. Particular attention will be on ‘kiddie cricket’ and how it can be used to stamp out violence against children, since that programme has now included a child protection dimension.

There will also be various presentations in a session titled ‘The Development of a CARICOM 2030 Strategy for Human Resource Development: the CARICOM Commission on Human Resource Development’. Topics focusing on ICTs in education and the financing of education will be reviewed under this agenda item.

An update will also be provided on preparations for CARIFESTA XII  to be held in Haiti 21-30 August, 2015.

Speakers at the opening ceremony on Thursday will include Chairman of the Meeting, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth, Sport, and Culture, St. Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Shawn Richards, Minster of Education, Guyana, the Hon. Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine and Assistant Secretary-General, Human and Social Development, CARICOM Secretariat, Dr. Douglas Slater.
