University of the West Indies’ Professor Verene Shepherd

University of the West Indies’ Professor Verene Shepherd, has been invited by the United Nations to deliver the keynote address at the special commemorative sitting of the UN General Assembly on Friday.

This special meeting of the UN has been called to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination under the theme: 'Learning from Historical Tragedies to Combat Racial Discrimination Today'. Professor Shepherd is the chairperson of Jamaica's National Commission on Reparations of the Ministry of Youth and Culture.

The March 20 Special Plenary sitting of the UN coincides with the commencement of the International Decade for Peoples of African Descent 2015-2024.

Professor Shepherd is a member of the UN Working Group of Experts of Peoples of African Descent.
