The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), José Miguel Insulza, received last night the South-South and Triangular Cooperation Visionary Award, during a gala dinner held in the framework of the Global South-South Development Expo, being held this week at the headquarters of the Organization in Washington DC.

Upon accepting the award, presented by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), Secretary General Insulza highlighted “the challenge of promoting innovation, partnership and leadership. As we all know the world is complex and the work of multilateral institutions can be slow and difficult. But only through this true cooperation, representing our citizens, can we advance in the plans needed to improve lives.”

The South-South and Triangular Cooperation Visionaries Awards are presented to people who have consistently embodied all three aspects of the annual South-South Cooperation Awards –innovation, partnership and leadership – over the course of their careers.

The presenter of the event, columnist Judy Kurtz highlighted, “the political will, integrity and vision” of Secretary General Insulza, and said his leadership “has made the OAS a bridge not only between the countries of the region, but also with the rest of the developing world and beyond.” Moreover, she emphasized his role in “conceiving pioneering instruments and opening new pathways of cooperation.”
