Gov’t to soon codify energy policy
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The government has used the observance of Caricom Energy week to announce plans to enact new renewable energy legislation, in a few weeks.
A government press release stated that the move would come as part of a multi-pronged approach to its energy policy.
“This government is committed to empowering Antiguans and Barbudans to benefit directly from our wind, solar and other renewable energy resources,” the release said.
“New technologies are making these energy sources more and more cost effective and efficient, and our government will continue to do its part to reduce the cost of renewable energy components through removal of duties on renewable energy equipment.”
The proposed legislation will provide a modern regulatory platform for grid scale and consumer level renewable energy in Antigua & Barbuda. The ABLP administration also announced plans to work with friendly governments and agencies to introduce renewable energy at government buildings.
This year, Caricom Energy Week will run from November 16 to 22. The theme for this year’s Caricom Energy Week is “Achieving Climate, Environmental and Economic Resilience through Sustainable Energy”.
