Government signs $36M agreement with China
Antigua & Barbuda has signed a $200 million RNB or US $36 million agreement with the Chinese government, officials report.
It follows Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s official visit to the Asian country. Part of the deal is for financing the Deep Water Harbour Development Project, which includes a cruise ship section, hotel and museum. An interest-free US $4.8 million loan for projects is also included in the package. Government won’t have to begin repayments until 2024.
Three million dollars-worth of goods, equipment and technical support has been provided to enhance the nation’s capacity to address climate change. The agreement also speaks to an eight member ophthalmologist medical team to carry out a Cataract Surgery Clinic at the hospital in early 2015. The Chinese have pledged assistance to developing the University of Antigua & Barbuda and a Chinese Language teaching programme in secondary schools.
In return, Prime Minister Gaston says the nation will eliminate the visa requirements for Chinese citizens. And Antigua and Barbuda will support China’s bid to reform the United Nations Security Council.
