The link below is to an article written by Ron Vail, the director of Food Safety and GFSI Education at AIB International and Sonal Sinha, Associate Vice President Industry Solutions at MetricStream. The document was designed to give guidance to companies looking to implement a streamlined process to gain and sustain certification, thereby continually improving food safety strategies and practices.

DECODING GFSI
The beginning of the second millennium witnessed a number of food safety crises across the world ranging from widespread salmonella poisoning in eatables, to finding of worms in packaged food products. Several well-documented contamination and product recall cases led to the launch of the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) in 2000. For food manufacturers, retailers and suppliers aiming to build a credible business with the complete confidence of their consumers, as well as the constant support of their global partners, GFSI provides a trusted means for establishing high safety and quality standards. The GFSI platform acts as an international quality benchmark in the food industry, and helps establish uniform and consistent international food safety standards. The GFSI schemes also enable companies to comply with the requirements of the 2011 Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) that aims to create a safer, transparent and efficient food supply chain. Complying with GFSI approved schemes helps reduce audit duplication throughout the supply chain. The big attraction is that GFSI bench-marking criteria can be integrated with existing food safety schemes, thus allowing flexibility and cost efficiency.
