BARBADOS-LABOUR-No breakthrough in talks to end sugar workers strike

Apr 15, 2014

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Labour Minister Dr Esther Byer Suckoo is expected to continue talks here on Tuesday after talks with officials of the of the Barbados Agricultural Management Corporation (BAMC) and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) failed to end a six-day strike by sugar workers on Monday.

Workers at the island’s lone sugar factory Portvale have been off the job for the past week protesting the manner in which 50 of their colleagues at the Andrews Sugar Factory were retrenched by the BAMC last month.

But after nearly seven hours of talks on Monday, BWU general secretary Sir Roy Trotman told reporters Monday night that he was disappointed at the lack of progress.
