BLACK HISTORY IS OUR HISTORY

Mar 06, 2014

Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 06, 2014 (SKNIS): As part of their History Heritage Day, the History Department of the Verchilds High School recently held a concert which transported the students through time.
The journey to the past started off with a song entitled Stand Up, Defend Your Rights, a song which students said spoke volumes about the injustices of black persons and what still occurs today.
Other performances included poetry pieces, skits, re-enactments of slave auctions and cane cutting.
Head of the History Department Marcella Burckley noted that the concert was a perfect opportunity for students to learn about their heritage apart from the traditional learning from a history book.
A cultural wear contest for teachers and students was also held during the day.
The Ministry of Education fully endorsed the initiative of the Verchilds High School  which brought country’s history to life.
