EDITORIAL: Terrorism in Kenya and Pakistan

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Terrorism has now become so pervasive that it is a global problem and even countries with large military might are finding it difficult to contain this ever rising menace to peace and stability.
There are many young disaffected people around the world who have no compunction about inflicting unspeakable harm on innocent unsuspecting people in order to make a point. It is all part of the dogma of a growing insidious and intolerant political culture.

Decriminalise it?

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - he regional conversation on the decriminalisation of cannabis would appear to be firmly re-fixed again in the public domain. We use the term “re-fixed” advisedly since, while the latest initiative in this context might be reasonably attributed to the Honourable Prime Minister of St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, readers may recall an earlier suggestion to similar effect by one of our puisne judges, Mr. Justice Randall Worrell, as well as sundry others over the years from individuals such as the late Dr.

Caribbean economies in crisis

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - In 1998, Red Plastic Bag (RPB) sang a song entitled Material. In that song, the lyrical master said: Trouble, every year calypsonians in trouble, it’s so hard to find material . . . but this year, have no fear ’cause RPB is here.
With those lyrics reverberating in my head, and as I reflect on the fact that so many Caribbean economies are in crisis, I could only wish someone or something was here to provide much needed “material” to allow us to resolve what clearly now seems to be fast approaching insurmountable economic woes.

The great ganja debate continues

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - IT IS NOT a new issue but one which we can no longer let dangle. From Kingston to Kingstown to Washington and Bridgetown, there is clearly momentum in the discussion on whether to decriminalize marijuana and what impact this will have on fighting illegal drugs in our region. It can best be described as the great ganja debate.

Solutions must match our needs

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - MANY will agree with the President of the Caribbean Development Bank, Dr. Warren Smith that economic growth across the Caribbean must be built on several pillars.
No longer can growth strategies be undertaken in isolation but rather through a coherent set of interrelated policies. They are necessary if the island nations of this region are to make a rebound from what has been the under performance by these economies for the most part over the last five to six years.

OUR CARIBBEAN: After Iraq war, Obama’s dilemma on Assad’s Syria

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Nation News - Still chastened by the unforgettable lies told by former President George Bush for “regime change” in Baghdad – achieved at horrific, mind-boggling human cost and devastation of Iraq – the American people should know that in our Caribbean region there are also deep anxieties over President Barack Obama’s impending US-led military attack in Syria.
