CARIBBEAN-EDUCATION-CXC reports increase in CAPE performance for the first time in six years

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados-based Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) Monday said that overall performance at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) has reached the 90 per cent mark for the first time in six years.

It said this year, 90.15 per cent of the Unit entries achieved Grades I – V, which are the acceptable grades at CAPE, noting that in the last five years the percentage of entries achieving acceptable Grades remained steady at 89 per cent.

LIAT route expansion a definite possibility

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Guardian - Additional routes are likely to be on the cards for regional airline LIAT. Speaking recently at the signing of the loan agreements between LIAT, the Caribbean Development Bank and the stakeholder governments of LIAT, Chairman of the Shareholder Governments and Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Ralph Gonsalves, said that the aircraft being purchased to upgrade the fleet, would allow the airline to go to other destinations within the region.

Dolphin treat at Burke’s Beach

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - FOR CLOSE to an hour and a half, bathers got an unusual treat when Burke’s Beach on Bay Street was transformed into an underwater park with the presence of more than two dozen dolphins.
One swimmer on the popular beach told the WEEKEND NATION he was pleasantly surprised when he saw the 30 dolphins make their way to the shore, before boat owners combined to manoeuvre the sea mammals back into the comfort of the deep waters.

CARIBBEAN-FOOD-OAS calls for urgent action in addressing food security

During a conference on food security and the economic implications held in Barbados this week, Assistant Secretary General Albert Ramdin has called for reforms in agriculture in the Caribbean, including increased public-private partnerships and renewed focus on research and development.

Transhipment potential highlighted by Tourism Minister

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - BARBADOS has potential to do more transhipment business from both ports of entry. Tourism Minister Richard Sealy says it is with this recognition that some changes will be needed to facilitate an around the clock operation. According to Sealy, “What we are saying is that there are some legislative adjustments and other things we would have to do if we want to make ourselves a modern services logistics hub through which cargo is being transhipped.”
