Antigua and Barbuda calls for reshaping of Millennium Development Goals

UNITED NATIONS, CMC - Antigua and Barbuda Wednesday called for a re-shaping of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) citing the challenges faced by developing countries, including the Caribbean, in meeting the commitments under the initiative.
Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, addressing the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said with a 15-year time span for its implementation, the MDG declaration was widely expected to inspire development and directly improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people.

Government warns of illegal information about Citizens Investment Programme

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua and Barbuda government has warned it would move against people setting up illegal websites to promote the island’s Citizenship Investment Programme (CIP).
Attorney General Justin Simon told Parliament that the Baldwin Spencer administration is in the process of building its own website to promote the CIP that the government hopes will, within three years attract 1,800 new citizens or 450 families and generate US$550 million by offering citizenship in return for investment or a direct financial contribution.

LIAT accepts resignation of CEO

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The regional airline, LIAT, Wednesday said it had accepted the resignation of its chief executive officer, Ian Brunton, more than a week after it promised a “formal announcement” on the issue.
But the brief statement gave no reasons for Brunton’s resignation, saying that Mrs Julie Reifer-Jones has been appointed to act in the position.
“The Board of Directors thanks Mr. Brunton for his service and wishes him every success in his future endeavours,” the statement added.

Antiguan diplomat says world is saddled with various problems including ethnic extremism

UNITED NATIONS, CMC – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) began its annual debate here on Tuesday grappling with problems from ethnic and religious extremism to the ongoing global economic and financial crisis.
Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador, John W. Ashe, who is presiding over the UNGA debate said the world headlines are now filled with reports of wars; grinding poverty and malnutrition; gender violence; adverse effects of climate change and loss of valuable biodiversity; and the struggles of men, women and the young seeking to live with human dignity and peace.

Worst summer yet, says tourism official

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Despite the accolades received during the recently held World Travel Awards and the country’s involvement in major promotional events, the twin-island state struggled through the summer months.
General Manager of the Antigua & Barbuda Hotel and Tourism Association Neil Forrester yesterday revealed Antigua & Barbuda “has just encountered the worst summer yet.”
Forrester, while speaking on OBSERVER Radio’s Big Issues yesterday, said it was a good summer for events, but not visitor arrivals.

CARIBBEAN-AVIATION-LIAT denies newspaper article regarding CPL

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Antigua-based regional airline, Tuesday denied a regional newspaper that the founder of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) lost millions of dollars as a result of the operations of the airline during the competition last month.
The Barbados Sunday Sun newspaper quoted businessman Ajmal Khan as describing the airline service as a “travesty” and that the cash-strapped airline had cost tournament organizers “millions of dollars” in additional expenses because of air travel woes.

CARIBBEAN-AVIATION-LIAT plane lands safely after experiencing pressurization problem

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The troubled regional airline, LIAT, Wednesday denied media reports that smoke was seen coming from one of its aircraft that had developed a pressurization problem while on a flight from Dominica to Barbados on Tuesday night. LIAT, which earlier this week confirmed that one of its aircraft had experienced a “main wheel failure during takeoff,” said that the Tuesday flight with 18 passengers on board landed safely at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

UPDATE-CARIBBEAN-AVIATION-LIAT warns of further disruption

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC– the regional airline, LIAT, Monday warned passengers to brace for more travelling woes this week after one of its new aircraft was grounded “as a result of a technical issue”. In a statement, the airline told passengers that “its operations continue to be affected by numerous challenges throughout its network” and that despite the re-fleeting exercise LIAT continues to operate its scheduled passenger and cargo service and carry out scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on its entire fleet of aircraft including the Dash 8 and new ATR 72.
