Antiguan receives prestigious political award

ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Greenbay resident Victor Richardson II is the first Caribbean national to receive the prestigious honour of the US-based Campaigns and Elections Magazine’s Rising Star award for political consulting.
The 2013 awardee experienced elation on hearing the news. He said he was at sea hauling fish pots and as soon as he got within signal range, he received word of his achievement via WhatsApp instant messaging from his boss in the US.

ANTIGUA-FINANCE-Fiscal performance improves in first quarter

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC - The Baldwin Spencer led administration is boasting a 500 per cent improvement in the fiscal performance for the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period last year.
Finance and Economy Minister Harold Lovell said this was largely due to an almost 24 per cent drop in expenditure from the previous EC$172.6 million.

CARIBBEAN-AVIATION-LIAT introduces security charges

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The regional airline, LIAT, which is in the process of acquiring a fleet of new aircraft, Wednesday said it was increasing the cost of its tickets to include a security surcharge.

A statement from the Antigua-based airline said that the surcharge on tickets is “in response to rising security demands and spiralling security costs.

“The new security surcharge of US$1.25 per one way trip applies to all passengers, including children and infants, on all LIAT flights.”

ECCB announces monetary protection plan

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Bank depositors in the sub-region can look forward to a greater level of protection after the announcement that an Eastern Caribbean Deposit Insurance Corporation will be created.
Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) Governor General Sir Dwight Venner revealed that a total of four new institutions will be established to help “stabilise and consolidate the financial sector” in the sub-region.

St Kitts PM condemns shooting of bank manager

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A prime minister for one of the sister islands in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) has condemned the shooting of a bank manager that occurred during an attack one of the bank’s branches in Antigua Monday night.
St Kitts & Nevis Prime Minister Denzil Douglas described the incident as regrettable.

Good news on the information front

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - We could not be happier as we witness what appears to be a serious attempt to bring Antigua & Barbuda fully into the information age. A highly important plan to make information available to the public, at little or no direct cost, has been in the news recently. The plan is for an “Open Data” information system to be established so that the public can get access to non-sensitive information, which the government has at its disposal.

Cash Flow Woes At LIAT

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Following last weekend’s fanfare and celebration surrounding LIAT’s acquisition of the first of eight new ATR aircraft, cash flow problems resulting from the re-fleeting exercise have surfaced.
LIAT management warned staff that June salaries may be paid late because of “severe cash flow constraints” – a direct result of shareholder governments’ failure to keep their promise to finance the purchase of LIATs new fleet.

A&B ready for take off of open data

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – An assessment team from the World Bank said Antigua & Barbuda is poised to become the regional leader in Open Data, but that government will have to lead the way.
“This really is an all of government effort and so it requires political backing from an overall champion leader for the Open Data initiative,” said Anat Lewin, World Bank operations officer.
In late April, the Ministry of Telecommunications hosted a team from the World Bank and the Caribbean Open Institute, which assessed the nation’s Open Data readiness.

Antigua’s opposition alert

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - THE parliamentary opposition Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) has alerted the secretariats of both the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of American States (OAS) to what it views as a serious threat to constitutional, democratic governance in that twin-island  Eastern Caribbean country.
