US reality show filmed in Antigua & Barbuda

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – With approximately eight million viewers world-wide tuning in, the islands of Antigua and Barbuda will take centre stage as the romantic backdrop for the ABC Television primetime reality series, The Bachelorette. Antigua & Barbuda, ‘The Romance Capital of the Caribbean’ was chosen from among other Caribbean destinations as the perfect location for the upcoming season finale episodes of the hit TV show, the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority said in a release.

Culture minister defends size of Carifesta delegation

ST JOHN’S, Antigua- Culture Minister Eleston “Namba” Adams has defended his decision to select 89 people to represent Antigua & Barbuda at the Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta) 2013 to be held in Suriname.
He said not only is sending such a large delegation necessary to emphasise the importance of the cultural industry, but also allows talented young people a chance to represent the country.
“We have to prepare our people. It is a sustainable industry and many people these days even doctors and lawyers are turning to the cultural industry,” the minister explained.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua- After 10 years of stalemate negotiations and estimated billions of dollars lost when United States legislation decimated the local gaming industry, government has moved towards collecting on World Trade Organisation (WTO) approved sanctions.
Government yesterday announced the establishment of a seven-member WTO Remedies Implementation Committee (RIC), to implement the sanctioning process.

LIAT seeks to assure customers of improved services

JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The regional airline, LIAT, Monday assured the travelling public that it is committed to improving the level of service offered by the airline even as disgruntled pilots warned of “several vexing issues”. The airline did not specifically refer to a statement by the Chairman of the Leeward Islands Airline Pilots Association (LIALPA), Carl Burke, that the union had been forced to call an emergency meeting to seek a mandate from its members on several vexing issues.

Eighteen to represent country at Carifesta

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The government will be sending an 18-member contingent to the 2013 Caribbean Festival of Arts (Carifesta) to be held in Suriname next month.
Culture Minister Eleston Adams said the contingent would be representative of all aspects of the local culture inclusive of drama, dance, music, culinary arts and literature.
He said Carifesta, to be held from August 16-25, allows the region’s foremost performers to come together in a single space.

CPA conference to focus on threats to Caribbean democracy

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – A meeting of parliamentarians from around the region in Antigua & Barbuda later this month will see real examples of threats to Caribbean democracy ventilated. That’s according to Speaker of the House D Gisele Isaac, who said, “I proposed to the broader executive, instead of dealing with theoretical subjects as we tend to do, let’s look at the actual issues facing the Caribbean countries.” Isaac also serves, along with Senate President Hazlyn Francis, as co-president of the Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic Region of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association
