Commonwealth Secretary-General pledges to challenge development assistance rules

Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland has promised to ramp up advocacy for the reform of development assistance rules which member states say are restricting aid to storm ravished countries in the Caribbean. The Secretary-General made the commitment at meetings with leaders in Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica during visits to the countries to discuss Commonwealth support after hurricanes Irma and Maria caused widespread devastation. Today she issued a statement about her trip to the islands.

 

Statistics must play vital role in reconstruction of hurricane-hit islands – Dr. Philomen Harrison

There is a vital role for statistics to play in the reconstruction of Caribbean islands that were severely damaged by the recent hurricanes that swept through the Region, Project Director, Regional Statistics, Dr. Philomen Harrison said last week.

At the opening of several regional Statistics events in the Cayman Islands, Dr. Harrison referred to the “utter desolation” the storms left in their wake, and called for a discourse on CARICOM Small Island Development States (SIDS) and Statistics in the context of disasters.

Food Security: A Priority in Dominica

Tuesday, October 31, 2017 — It has been just over a month since the Eastern Caribbean’s ‘food bowl’ was left bare following a direct hit from one of the strongest hurricanes to pass through the Caribbean basin – Hurricane Maria.
