UNITED STATES-DRUGS- US Coast Guard sends cocaine smugglers to Guantanamo Bay

MIAMI, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says crew members from the Cutter Northland and Coast Guard Station Miami Beach have offloaded over 1,000 pounds of cocaine and transferred the alleged smugglers to US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) officials in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
On Saturday, the Coast Guard reported that the estimated street value of the drugs was US$19 million.

UNITED STATES-CRIME -Potentially damning evidence found against ex-football star accused of killing Antiguan-born semi-professional

BOSTON, Massachusetts, July 4, CMC – The police say they have found potentially damning evidence allegedly linking ex-National Football (NFL) star Aaron Hernandez in the execution-style murder of Antiguan-born, semi-professional football player, Odin Lloyd.
On Wednesday, Massachusetts State Police released a 36-page summary of returns from a search warrant it executed at an apartment maintained by the former Patriots tight-end, detailing the .45-caliber ammunition collected as evidence in the ongoing homicide investigation.

UNITED STATES- MIGRATION -US Coast Guard repatriates Cuban migrants

MIAMI, Florida, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says it has repatriated 37 Cuban migrants to Bahia de Cabañas, Cuba.
On Wedneday, the Coast Guard said crewmembers aboard the cutter Margaret Norvell repatriated the Cubans the day before “as a result of four separate interdiction cases.”
Between June 26 and 29, Coast Guard crewmembers worked alongside US Customs and Border Protection agents to “stop the illegal immigration of Cuban migrants into the United States.

CARIBBEAN-TRANSPORTATION : Case study competition on road safety launched

CARIBBEAN-DEVELOPMENT- Forum urges enhanced skills training in kick-starting growth in the Caribbean

WASHINGTON, CMC - A World Bank-backed forum has called for improved skills training, revitalize investments and increase connectivity “both physical and virtual “ in kick-starting growth in the Caribbean.

The Washington-based financial institution said that was the message from a mix of local business people, civil society and ministers from across the region, known as Caribbean Growth Forum (CGF), a joint initiative by the Compete Caribbean Program, the Inter-American Development Bank, the World Bank, and the Caribbean Development Bank.

US Coast Guard rescues Haitian fishermen

MIAMI, CMC – The United States Coast Guard says it has rescued five Haitian fishermen aboard a disabled vessel that had been drifting in the waters off northern Haiti.
A brief Coast Guard statement said officials were notified that the vessel had been found in the area of Canal de Tortue and contrary to earlier reports, there were five fishermen on the boat and not nine.
The statement said all are safe and in no immediate distress.

IICA warns of water shortage

MEXICO CITY, CMC – The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) says Latin America and Caribbean countries will have to adopt new water management models as agricultural production, industry and energy generation vie for the commodity in coming years.
Delegates from more than 20 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have been meeting here for the IICA Executive Committee meeting.

Major credit rating agency revises Curacao’s economic outlook

NEW YORK, CMC - A major international credit rating agency has revised Curacao’s economic outlook from negative to stable.
The Wall Street-based Standard & Poor’s (S&P) Ratings Service cited the government’s efforts in enhancing its financial situation as the reason for the revision. 
“The government raised health care and general pension premiums, as well as raised the retirement age to 65 from 60. As a result, we expect the deficit in the general pension system to gradually return to surpluses over the next decade,” it said in a statement.
