WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States Tuesday said it is “proud to call” Jamaica a “partner and friend” as the island celebrates its 51st anniversary of political independence from Britain.

“On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I extend warm wishes to the people of Jamaica on the occasion of your 51st year of independence this August 6,” said US Secretary of State John Kerry.

“The United States and Jamaica enjoy a close friendship based on common values, shared history, and a vibrant Jamaican-American community,” he added.

CARIBBEAN-WEATHER-Forecasters predict “slightly” lower active 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season

OLORADO, CMC - Weather forecasters at Colorado State University (CSU) have lowered their prediction for the 2013 Atlantic Hurricane Season.

“We continue to anticipate an above-average season in 2013, although we have lowered our forecast slightly due to anomalous cooling in the eastern subtropical and tropical Atlantic,” said Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray in their latest prediction. 

“We expect an above-average probability of United States and Caribbean major hurricane landfall.”

CARIBBEAN-MIGRATION-Haitian nationals among 69 migrants repatriated by US Coast Guard

MIAMI, CMC - The United States Coast Guard says it has repatriated 69 migrants including 26 Haitian nationals.

It said the crew of the cutters, William Flores and Sitkinak, also repatriated 43 Cuban migrants.

“These repatriations are a result of five separate interdiction cases throughout the Caribbean Sea,” The Coast Guard said in a statement.

U.S. extends embassy closings, lawmakers say threat serious

WASHINGTON, (Reuters) – The United States extended embassy closures by a week in the Middle East and Africa as a precaution yesterday after an al Qaeda threat that U.S. lawmakers said was the most serious in years.
The State Department said 19 U.S. embassies and consulates would be closed through Saturday “out of an abundance of caution” and that a number of them would have been closed anyway for most of the week due to the Eid celebration at the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

UNITED STATES CRIME American national given lengthy jail term for child sex tourism offence in Haiti

MIAMI, CMC – A 68-year-old American has been sentenced to 165 years in jail, followed by a lifetime of supervised release, after he was found guilty of child sex tourism offences in Haiti.
Acting United States Assistant Attorney General Mythili Raman, said Matthew Andrew Carter, 68, also known as “William Charles Harcourt” and “Bill Carter” was sentenced by US District Judge Joan A. Lenard of the Southern District of Florida on Wednesday.

Warning for Caribbean countries

WASHINGTON, CMC – Caribbean countries have been warned that while increased financial integration has facilitated the flow of funds and allowed regional countries to overcome scale constraints, the increased interconnectedness has also built systemic risks and increased the likelihood of contagion.

International trends consultant to address tourism conference

World Bank backs Caribbean’s steady poverty reduction

WASHINGTON, CMC – The World Bank has committed US$11.8 billion in the 2013 fiscal year to support Latin America and the Caribbean resilience in the midst of global turmoil.
The Washington-based financial institution said this includes resources from its International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA).
