MESSAGE FROM CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL, MR. EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, ON THE OCCASION OF INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, 8 MARCH 2001

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) once again joins with the rest of the international community in commemorating the United Nations designated International Women's Day. This occasion provides an opportunity to recognize the significant role women have played in the life, livelihood and sustainability of our Region and indeed, in other parts of the world and to record our appreciation therefor.

RESOLUTION ON BELIZE/GUATEMALA RELATIONS ISSUED BY THE HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AND CANADA AT THEIR SIXTH SUMMIT MEETING, 19 JANUARY 2001, MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and CANADA, at their Sixth Summit Meeting at Montego Bay, Jamaica, on 19 January 2001,

Having considered recent developments in Belize-Guatemala relations;

Welcoming the fact that on 8 November, 2000 Belize and Guatemala signed an Agreement on Confidence Building Measures witnessed by the Permanent Council of the Organisation of American States;

It is a pleasure for me to be back in Barbados for this, the Sixth Meeting of the Community Council and I thank the Government of Barbados for offering to host this important meeting.

I gather that this is one in a series of meetings being held here to continue the process of developing and strengthening the legal and institutional framework to enable us to move forward in the achievement of our objectives - the deepening and widening of Caribbean integration.

During the past year, St. Kitts and Nevis, has had the honour and the privilege, to chair the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR). In fact, we in St. Kitts and Nevis, have been very fortunate, to be the Chair, of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) and since January 1, to have taken over the Chairmanship of the Principal organ of the Community - the Heads of Government.

PRESS STATEMENT CARIFESTA VII IN ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

Due to the need to garner all resources for the staging of CARIFESTA VII in August of this year, the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis has taken the decision to postpone the year 2000 Music Festival.

Sincere gratitude is expressed to all individuals, groups, firms and organisations who whole heartedly supported past Music Festivals and it is hoped that the interest and spirit of co-operation will be forthcoming for the year 2001.
