I am honoured to be here with you this afternoon at the invitation of Professor Sankat to deliver this lecture and begin the series of Distinguished Lectures on our integration movement.  It is a discourse that is much needed and if my understanding is correct, I look forward to hearing from some of the Region’s iconic figures on this theme.

It is my pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of the Directorate of Human and Social Development and indeed the entire CARICOM Secretariat. I wish in particular to thank you Minister and your staff at the Ministry of Health for making the arrangements for hosting this meeting. I also wish to express great pleasure that The Hon. Orville London Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly has graced this opening ceremony with his presence.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to be here with all of you at the Closing Ceremony of the Eleventh Caribbean Festival of Arts and to deliver these brief remarks on behalf of the Secretary General of the Caribbean Community, H.E Mr. Irwin LaRocque.  This has been a very vibrant and exciting ten days of sharing and showcasing the many dimensions of our rich Caribbean culture, and that of our many visiting contingents of artists from UNASUR and other friends from outside our region.

Caribbean Wellness Day Message

Good day to all the people of the Caribbean.

Caribbean Wellness Day is celebrated by CARICOM countries on the second Saturday in September, as part of a unified response to promote health and prevent and control the epidemic of Non-Communicable Diseases or NCDs.

As Executive Director of the newly established Caribbean Public Health Agency – CARPHA, I’m pleased to celebrate this Wellness Revolution with the families of our 24 CARPHA Member countries.

Statement by Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on the occasion of Caribbean Wellness Day, 14 September 2013

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Six years after the historic signing by Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) of the 2007 Port-of-Spain Declaration ‘Uniting to Stop the Epidemic of NCDs’, the people of the Region are once again invited to join the Wellness Revolution as we observe Caribbean Wellness Day 2013.

I wish to thank the Government and People of Grenada for their warm hospitality and join my colleagues in echoing appreciation for being in Grenada today among great company.  As we gather on the eve of the Fourth CARICOM-Cuba Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, there are several events that are occurring at the national, regional, hemispheric, and global levels that are guaranteed to usher in changes that will require our countries to adapt to the ever evolving geopolitical environment.
