CASTRIES, St.Lucia, Feb. 28, CMC - Opposition Leader Stephenson King wants St.Lucia's Ambassador to the United Nations recalled following what he described as an embarrassing ordeal with the island losing its voting rights as a result of outstanding monies owed to the body. King told a news conference Wednesday that the development was an embarrassment not only for the government but the people of St.Lucia. He said that the excuses being made by Ambassador Menissa Rambally are quite "disappointing and astounding" and she should be immediately recalled.

ST. LUCIA-LABOUR-PM to address nation as public workers stay home to recuperate and rest

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony will address the nation on Wednesday as public workers stayed away from their jobs for a second consecutive day “resting and recuperating.” The Trade Union Federation (TUF) is seeking a 9.5 per cent wage increase for the workers, including teachers, but the government has said it could only afford a four per cent salary hike for the 2010-12 triennium.

St. Lucia agrees to join PetroCaribe

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government says it expects to accrue major benefits for the island following the decision of Castries to join the Venezuelan oil initiative, PetroCaribe. “This will make it possible for the country to receive a regular supply of petroleum products from Venezuela under the PetroCaribe arrangements that are currently being utilized by several other nations in the Caribbean,” a statement issued by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Energy.

OECS begins consultations on WTO trade issues

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – A series of consultations aimed at identifying national and regional measures to better facilitate trade in keeping with the commitments being negotiated under trade facilitation within the World Trade Organization (WTO) began here on Monday.
The consultations to be held throughout the seven-member Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States are aimed at simplifying and harmonizing international trade procedures such as payment of fees, access to information and cooperation between customs and other authorities.

Opposition Leader warns about joining PetroCaribe

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – Opposition Leader Stephenson King is (warning) the St. Lucia government against joining the Venezuelan oil initiative, PetroCaribe, saying it could bring the island into further debt.
"Let's not get involved in this matter, this is not one for the government, as it’s not a situation where fuel is being sold to the country at a cheaper rate. The fuel is being sold at the very rate that we are currently purchasing it from Trinidad or elsewhere," King said.
