GUYANA POTENTIALLY THE BRUSSELS OF THE CARIBBEAN - CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL

CARICOM URGED TO OBSERVE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF ABOLITION OF TRANS-ATLANTIC SLAVE TRADE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), His Excellency Edwin Carrington is reminding all Member States that Sunday, 25 March 2007 marks the 200th year since the Proclamation of the Abolition of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, and urges them to implement programmes of activities to commemorate this event on Sunday, or during the week beginning 25 March 2007.

This is an important event for the youth of the Caribbean and indeed for the CARICOM Community. This evening we are actually here to launch the activities of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development, which was mandated by the Conference of Heads of Government in July 2006. It is my pleasure as the Lead Head for Youth Affairs, Gender, Culture and Sport to welcome you all to the Republic of Suriname.

First of all, I would like to thank the President of the Republic of Suriname, H.E Runaldo Venetiaan who holds lead responsibility for Culture, Youth, Gender and Sport within the CARICOM Community, not only for his presence at this function this evening, but also for the continuing interest that he has shown and the leadership he has given in matters related to the strengthening of the Community and in this case the well-being of the youth in Suriname and the region as a whole.

YOUTH COMMISSIONERS CHALLENGED TO ADVOCATE FOR CSME

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) President of the Republic of Suriname His Excellency Runaaldo R Venetiaan has charged youth commissioners to be consistent in their advocacy on the ideals of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), the flagship of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
