CRNM Presents New Industry Study on Agri-Food Distribution Services

Mar 06, 2007

The agri-food distribution service sector is particularly important as it facilitates the delivery of agri-food products from the producer to the consumer using the services of retailers, wholesalers and restaurants. The agri-food distribution services sector is particularly important to CARICOM. The Food Distribution Service industry in CARICOM has over 17,000 firms, employing 112,000 people and generating sales of US$ 5.6 billion per annum. As one of the largest components of the services sector, it is vital for development and has important linkages with other key export sectors such as tourism, agricultural production and food manufacturing. However current inefficiencies in this sector limit overall competitiveness. The development of this sector requires a comprehensive policy response that emphasizes development incentives, appropriate regulatory environments and well structured negotiation strategies related to the sector in international trade negotiations. When appropriately integrated in the productive framework of Caribbean economies, this sector can contribute significantly to national and regional competitiveness and development of the Caribbean economies. The CRNM is pleased to present a new study Assessment of the Agri-Food Distribution Industry in CARICOM (View Study) which presents pertinent information to assist the formulation of development policy. The study presents new information on the Caribbean agri-food distribution services industry and agri-food markets, such as consumer trends and economic contribution, and provides an analysis of the sector relative to international trends and performance benchmarks. The analysis outlines opportunities and challenges of trade in agri-food distribution services as reported by a wide range of industry players and government officials; key issues arising from the region's integration process and involvement in international trade negotiations; recommendations for domestic and trade policy measures to promote the development and global competitiveness of the sector.
