CRITI OFF TO A FIERY LAUNCH

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Regional Information and Translation Institute (CRITI) was launched in Paramaribo, Suriname on Thursday 17 January with a burst of firecrackers in the presence of the President of the Republic of Suriname His Excellency Drs Runaldo Venetiaan.

CARICOM SUPPORTS TRAINING OF SOLAR WATER HEATER TECHNICIANS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Solar water heater manufacturers and other stakeholders of the solar heating industry in the Caribbean Community will be involved in a two-day workshop in Barbados at the Divi Southwinds Hotel, 17-18 January 2008.

TRANSLATION INSTITUTE TO BE LAUNCHED IN SURINAME

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Regional Information and Translation Institute (CRITI) will be launched in Suriname on Thursday 17 January 2008.

At the launch, the President of Suriname, His Excellency Runaaldo Venetiaan and the Secretary-General of the Caribbean Forum of ACP States (CARIFORUM), His Excellency Edwin Carrington will sign an Headquarters Agreement. The President and the Secretary-General are also expected to unveil a plaque on the premises to be used for the headquarters of the Institute in Paramaribo.

CARICOM OFF TO FLYING START IN 2008

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is off to a flying start this year with a series of activities planned for January 2008.

Secretary-General of CARICOM, His Excellency Edwin Carrington began his hectic schedule on Monday 7 January when he held discussions with Sir Peter Ricketts, Permanent Under Secretary of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, United Kingdom.

SURINAME CENTRE OF COMMUNITY ATTENTION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Suriname will be the centre of attention later this week in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) when two Regional Institutions will be launched at their headquarters in Paramaribo.

The launch of the Caribbean Regional Information and Translation Institute (CRITI) and the inauguration of the CARICOM Competition Commission will take place on Thursday 17 January and Friday 18 January respectively.

ALL SET FOR LAUNCH OF CARICOM COMPETITION COMMISSION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Plans are well advanced for the Inauguration Ceremony of the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) Competition Commission, including the swearing in of the Commissioners, which takes place on Friday 19 January 2008 in Paramaribo, Suriname. The gala ceremony will be aired live via television throughout the Community and high level representatives are expected from the Member States of the Community.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL RECEIVES GLOBAL LEADERSHIP AWARD

 (CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Secretary-General, His Excellency Edwin Carrington recently received the International Third World Leaders Association (ITWLA), Distinguished Global Leadership Award.

ITWLA, based in The Bahamas, is a global network of Christian leaders from more than 40 nations. Its membership encompasses leaders from among government officials, church leaders, athletes, business persons and educators. The Association is committed to providing relevant resources and skills refinement for global leaders.

BAHAMAS PM TAKES OVER AS CARICOM CHAIRMAN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Bahamas is the new Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from 1 January 2008 to 30 June 2008.

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE EIGHTH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE PAN CARIBBEAN PARTNERSHIP AGAINST HIV AND AIDS (PANCAP), 29-31 OCTOBER 2008, MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  Under the theme, Leadership: Uniting Vision and Purpose, the Eighth Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP) was held on 29 -31 October 2008, in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

The three-day meeting attracted some 170 registered and specially invited guests drawn from 29 countries of the English, Dutch, French and Spanish Caribbean, 33 regional agencies, 15 bilateral and multilateral agencies and 10 development partners.

INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY, ENHANCE COMPETITIVENESS - CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, H.E. Edwin Carrington has called on the Region to increase productivity and enhance its competitiveness to adequately confront the effects of more open markets.

The Secretary-General gave the charge at his end-of-year press conference via videoconferencing anchored at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana on 18 December 2007. With him in Georgetown were members of Executive Management of the Secretariat and other senior staff members.
