JOINT COTED/COHSOD OPENS THURSDAY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Matters relating to Free Movement in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) as well as Culture and Trade in the CSME will be high on the agenda of the Second Joint Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) and the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) which opens on Thursday 24 January in Georgetown, Guyana.

23 JANUARY SPECIAL DAY FOR CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) January 23 is a date of special significance to the people of the Caribbean Community and in particular to the people of Saint Lucia.

Two of the Caribbean’s Nobel Laureates, the late Sir Arthur Lewis and Mr Derek Walcott were born on 23 January in Saint Lucia, 15 years apart. Sir Arthur, who won the Nobel Prize for Economics in 1979 and died in 1991, was born on 23 January 1915, while Mr Walcott, who earned his Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, was born on 23 January 1930.

PACKED AGENDA FOR TWENTY-FIFTH COTED

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Twenty-Fifth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) opens in Georgetown on Friday 25 January with a packed agenda that includes recommendations from the technical team which earlier this week considered poverty and rising cost of living in the Region.

SURINAMESE WINS COMPETITION COMMISSION LOGO DESIGN PRIZE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Ms Henna Brunnings, a national of Suriname, topped a Regional field of 8 entries to win the contest for the design of the logo for the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Competition Commission

Ms Brunnings was presented with her prize and a scroll during the ceremony marking the inauguration of the Commission on Friday 18 January at the Commission’s headquarters in Paramaribo, Suriname. CARICOM Secretary-General His Excellency Edwin Carrington made the presentation. The winner’s prize was US $2,500.
