STATEMENT BY THE RIGHT HONOURABLE HUBERT INGRAHAM, PRIME MINISTER, THE BAHAMAS, ON BEHALF OF THE CAR

On behalf of the Caribbean Constituency, I wish to thank the host of this meeting, the Republic of Colombia as well as the city of Medellin, the staff of the Inter-American Development Bank Group and the other organizations and businesses involved in this event. All their hard work and attention to details behind the scenes has made this the 50th meeting of the Board of Governors of the IDB an outstanding organizational success.

FUTURE OF SUSTAINABLE COMMERCIAL FISHING UNDER MICROSCOPE AT PANEL DISCUSSION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The uncertainties surrounding the future of sustainable commercial fishing in the Caribbean region will be explored tomorrow, Thursday, when the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM), in collaboration with the CARICOM Secretariat hosts the panel discussion: `Caribbean Fisheries: Sinking or Swimming in Uncertain Waters’.

CLIMATE CHANGE AS A GENERATOR OF EMPLOYMENT IN KEY ECONOMIC SECTORS OF THE CARIBBEAN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) As the international community continues to give significant attention to the global phenomenon, Climate Change, Mr. Garfield Barnwell, Director of Sustainable Development at the CARICOM Secretariat posited some insights into how the Caribbean Region could transform this threat into employment opportunities when he made his presentation to the Second CARICOM Climate Change Conference in Castries, St .Lucia on 23-24 March 2009.

“RESPONDING EFFECTIVELY TO THE GLOBAL HURRICANE REQUIRES GLOBAL PARTNERSHIP” BY DR EDWARD GREENE, ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL, HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY SECRETARIAT, DELIVERED AT CONFERENCE ON “CAUGHT IN A GLOBAL HURRICANE: DEBATING THE CARIBBEAN’S DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES IN AN UNCERTAIN WORLD”, 24 MARCH 2009, WASHINGTON D.C.

This Conference is most timely and its theme is appropriately expressive of the daunting prospects facing the Caribbean as it confronts several challenges and prepares for the epic Fifth Summit of the Americas to be held in Port-of-Spain Trinidad and Tobago, among others. The Summit is being planned and implemented as a CARICOM hosted event in Trinidad and Tobago.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS FOR COP-15 CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) As the Caribbean Community gears up for the impending 15th Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Denmark, it is expecting to come away with an Agreement that helps to expand the Caribbean‘s capacity to reduce its vulnerability to the effects of Climate Change.

DEVELOPMENT PARTNERS TO STRENGTHEN TIES WITH CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A number of International Development Partners attending the Second Caribbean Community Conference on Climate Change held in Castries, Saint Lucia on 23-24 March, have re-affirmed their commitment to strengthening ties with the Caribbean Community in developing resilience to the global challenge of Climate Change.

REGION TO GET BOOST IN TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Efforts are underway through the Washington-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) to extend the installation of Coral Reef Early Warning Systems (CREWs) stations throughout the Caribbean. This would help to build capacity in detecting and responding to early warning signs in climate change.
