MADRID DECLARATION ISSUED BY THE VI EUROPEAN UNION-LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN (EU-LAC) SUMMIT, 18 MAY 2010, MADRID, SPAIN

1. We, the Heads of State and Government of the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, the President of the European Council and the President of the Commission, have convened in Madrid on 18 May 2010, in order to reaffirm our commitment to continue promoting and strengthening our Bi-regional Strategic Partnership based on our common principles, values and interests.

COTED to evaluate CARICOM’s ICT progress

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Measures to accelerate the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will be in focus at the Thirty-Fourth Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) which convenes 28 May, in St. Georges, Grenada.

CARICOM MOUNTS SEARCH FOR MISSING PERSONNEL

Subsequent to earlier information, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has learnt that four delegates who were attending the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS), in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, have not been accounted for.

The delegates include a national of Saint Lucia, a national of Trinidad and Tobago and two nationals of the Netherlands Antilles.

REGIONAL INTEGRATION AND DEVELOPMENT : THE RELEVANCE OF FUNCTIONAL COOPERATION.  KEYNOTE ADDRESS DELIVERED BY DR. This Conference is most timely. Its focus on higher education priorities, challenges and opportunities as bridges for strengthening integration between the Caribbean and Latin America, is consistent with the World Conference on Higher Education held in Paris in July 2009; the outcomes of the Fifth Summit of the Americas held in Port- of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, April 2009 and the UNESCO Declaration on Educational for All (1990).

CARICOM DELEGATION IN HAITI ON FOLLOW-UP MISSION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Former Jamaican Prime Minister Percival J. Patterson, Special Representative of the CARICOM Heads of Government on Haiti, is in Haiti as part of follow-up activities to the International Donor Conference: ‘Towards a New Future for Haiti’ held in New York last month. The Donor Conference, held at the United Nations Headquarters on 31 March, raised US$9.9B for Haiti’s reconstruction.
