CARICOM had strong team at ocean biodiversity treaty negotiations

CARICOM’s strong negotiating team for the just-agreed Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction treaty (BBNJ) comprised representatives of the Region’s Permanent Missions to the United Nations and capital base experts supported by scientific and legal experts drawn from the regional institutions (the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (and the University of the West Indies) with the CARICOM Secretariat providing technical, logistical and administrative support when needed. 

Treaty launches new chapter for equity in world’s ocean

March 4, 2023 marked a historic moment for the world’s oceans. After a marathon of intense, sometimes overnight negotiations, Member States of the United Nations agreed on the provisions of the ocean biodiversity treaty on the conservation and sustainable use of marine Biodiversity of areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ).

50th anniversary opportune for celebration, renewal, enriching legacy

As CARICOM Heads of Government reflect on the 50th anniversary of the Community this year, they are of the view that it was a fitting opportunity to celebrate, renew, look forward and enrich regional integration.

CARICOM was established on 4 July 1973 with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas by Founding Fathers, Prime Ministers Errol Barrow for Barbados; Forbes Burnham for Guyana; Michael Manley for Jamaica; and Dr. Eric Williams for Trinidad and Tobago.

CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY STATEMENT ON HAITI

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) notes the efforts made by various groups of Haitian stakeholders to negotiate political accords since 2021 to contribute to resolving the protracted political stalemate. This includes the latest agreement that was made public by the Interim Prime Minister on 21 December 2022.

Preliminary Statement - CARICOM Election Observation Mission to the Antigua and Barbuda General Elections, 18 January 2023

The seven (7) member CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) which was mounted by the Caribbean Community, at the invitation of the Government of Antigua and Barbuda, observed the General Election on 18 January 2023. The CEOM visited 184 of 188 polling stations across 16 constituencies in Antigua. Due to logistical challenges polling stations in Barbuda were not visited.

CARICOM Delegates Head to Canada for COP15

CARICOM delegates head to Montreal, Canada, for the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (UNCBD) (COP15) gearing up to create targets on biodiversity for the next decade.

The Conference, from December 7-19, will be held under the Presidency of China.

Importantly, the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is expected to be adopted during this second phase of the conference.

PANCAP WORLD AIDS DAY MESSAGE 2022 "EQUALIZE"

(Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV and AIDS) PANCAP joins the world in observance of World AIDS Day 2022 under the theme "EQUALIZE". It is a call to action for individuals and collectives to address inequalities, so that everyone can have access to high-quality prevention, treatment and support services and that our laws and policies address stigma and exclusion that hinder access to health services.
