KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Professor of Social and Political Change at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Brian Meeks, has warned that if the United States takes military action against Syria, Jamaica’s fragile economy could be in serious trouble.
On the weekend, Professor Meeks said a more dangerous Middle East is a more dangerous world and inevitably this would lead to even more instability in Jamaica.
ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The main opposition United Workers Party (UWP) gearing for a general election that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has hinted could come before the constitutional deadline, has elected talk show host Lennox Linton as its new leader.
Former Prime Minister Edison James said that the party had already selected a significant number of its candidates for the elections. In the December 18, 2009 general elections Skerrit’s Dominica Labour Party (DLP) won by an 18 of the 21 seats.
NASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell has returned here following a one week visit to the United States saying he was pleased “with the progress” being made regarding the illegal migration of Cubans into the Bahamas.
Prior to his departure for Washington last week, Mitchell had indicated that “a negotiating team would travel to Cuba “with a view to settling the modalities of how there can be a quicker turnaround of migrants to Cuba”.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - As various states across the United States legalise the use of medicinal marijuana, and others debate its benefits, it appears that Barbados might not be entirely immune from the discussion. This, as sources within the island’s Ministry of Health revealed to the Barbados Advocate recently that at the “highest level”, the use of medicinal marijuana to treat pain, cancer and sickle cell treatment was being discussed. However, they noted that “any decision made regarding its use and acceptance as a treatment in any setting would have be evidence-based”.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - A MEMORANDUM of Understanding (MOU) has been officially signed between the Financial Services Commission (FSC) and the Central Bank of Barbados ensuring greater stability in Barbados’ financial system. Principals of the two entities met at the Tom Adams Financial Centre yesterday afternoon to cement an already existing relationship as regulators of the securities, insurance, credit union and banking sector within Barbados.

Persad-Bissessar made the announcement at a Post-Cabinet News Conference at the Office of the Prime Minister. The life of local government bodies in Trinidad and Tobago came to an end on July 26th by law Local Government elections are due by within three (3) months after the life of the municipal corporations came to an end.
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The main opposition People’s National Movement (PNM) has described as “vulgar” the decision of the government to amend the Municipal Corporations Act to introduce the concept of proportional representation in Trinidad and Tobago. Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar, announcing the October 21 date for the Local Government election, said that her administration plans to introduce the concept of proportional representation that has been advocated as a fairer and stronger system for several years.
