CARICOM SECRETARY GENERAL MEETS CARICOM CHAIRMAN PIERRE CHARLES

CARICOM Secretary General, Mr Edwin Carrington, met with CARICOM Chairman, Dominican Prime Minister, Honourable Pierre Charles, in the Cabinet Room in Roseau, Dominica earlier today. The Dominican Leader holds the chairmanship of the fifteen-member grouping for the next six months.

The next intercessional meeting of the Community is tentatively set for Trinidad and Tobago, from February 14-15, 2003. According to the Secretary General, a number of critical areas are expected to explored in detail at that meeting. These include:

MESSAGE OF CONDOLENCE FROM MR. EDWIN CARRINGTON,  CARICOM SECRETARY GENERAL, TO THE PEOPLE’S NATIONAL CONGRESS/REFORM ON THE DEATH OF MR. HUGH DESMOND HOYTE, M.P, S.C.

It is with deepest regret, shock and sadness that the members of staff of the CARICOM Secretariat and I have learnt of the passing of Hugh Desmond Hoyte, SC, MP., former President of Guyana, on Sunday morning 22 December 2002 at his residence in Georgetown, Guyana.

Hugh Desmond Hoyte was a man who had to be respected for his rare qualities. An erudite man, he could not be faulted for his commitment to his country nor to his region as the historical Herdmanston Accord and Saint Lucia statements attest.

CIVIL SOCIETY ENCOUNTER A MAJOR CARICOM ACHIEVEMENT - SECRETARY-GENERAL CARRINGTON

CARICOM Secretary-General, Mr. Edwin Carrington identified the Forward Together Conference as one of the major achievements of the Caribbean Community in 2002.

The Conference which brought together the Heads of Government of CARICOM and organisations from civil society took place in Georgetown, Guyana last July. Mr Carrington and assisted by senior members of his management team held a Press Conference at the Secretariat's headquarters, Bank of Guyana building to update the media on a number of developments during the year.

STATEMENT BY CARICOM HEADS OF GOVERNMENT ON HAITI

Deeply concerned about the continuing instability in Haiti and the prospect of a breakdown in the social order, the Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) emphasise that only strict adherence to the democratic process will constitute a proper solution to the political problems in Haiti.

POSTPONEMENT OF CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) MISSION TO HAITI

It will be recalled that at the XXIII Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community held in Georgetown from July 3-5, 2002, the Heads of Government had accepted an invitation extended by the President of Haiti for a delegation led by the Chairman of Conference to visit Haiti before the end of 2002. 

The main purpose of the visit would be in recognition of Haiti’s membership and to encourage the process of inter-relationship between Haiti and the rest of the Community. 

SECRETARY-GENERAL RECEIVES SECOND HIGHEST BARBADOS HONOUR

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Mr Edwin Carrington on Saturday, 30 November 2002, received Barbados= second highest National Award, the Companion of Honour of Barbados (Honorary) (CHB).

At a glittering ceremony at Government House, Bridgetown which formed part of the celebrations marking the 36th Anniversary of Independence, Barbados Governor-General H.E Sir Clifford Husbands GCMG KA, pinned the insignia on Mr Carrington. The award was conferred on the Secretary-General Afor his outstanding contribution to the development of the Caribbean Region.@

PUBLIC STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) SECRETARIAT ON JAMAICA/US OPEN SKIES AGREEMENT

On 25 September 2002, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat received a Diplomatic Note dated 24 September 2002 from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica informing that the Government of Jamaica had “indicated to the Government of the United States of America its intention to resume bilateral ‘Open Skies’ negotiation on suitable dates between 21 and 30 October 2002.”

Statement issued at the conclusion of the Twenty-Seventh meeting of the Standing Committee of the Caribbean Community Statisticians (SCCS) and the Regional Census Coordinating Committee (RCCC), 11-15 November 2002, St. George’s, Grenada

Regional statisticians got together for back-to-back meetings during the past week, November 11-15, 2002 in St. George’s, Grenada to discuss critical issues relating to data collection, compilation and dissemination, in support of national and regional priorities and objectives. The Meetings were convened by the Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and hosted by the Government of Grenada.
