STATEMENT ISSUED BY H.E. PRESIDENT BHARRAT JAGDEO, CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF CARICOM,  ON THE OAS MISSION TO VENEZUELA

The Caribbean Community wishes to convey its full support for   the Mission to Venezuela currently being  led by  the Organisation of  American States (OAS) Secretary-General  H. E. Cesar  Gaviria with the aim of promoting political dialogue between the Government of President Hugo Chavez and opposition groups.

The Member States of the Community wish to reiterate the sentiments expressed in the statement issued by the Community on October 31, 2002 reaffirming the principles  of the Inter-American  Democratic Charter, subscribed to by all Member States of the OAS. In this regard, the Community expresses the hope that the traditions of democracy and the rule of law will   be allowed to  prevail .

The Community further urges a return to normalcy and  commitment  to sustained dialogue with a view to resolving the political impasse in Venezuela.
