CARICOM MESSAGE ON HAITI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is distressed at the initial reports coming out of Haiti in the wake of the destruction wrought by the series of earthquakes which struck its Member State on Tuesday.

As it continues to monitor the situation closely, CARICOM will move quickly to mobilize its disaster emergency response systems in order to render assistance to Haiti.

CARICOM INVITATIONAL GAMES SET FOR TRINIDAD 2009

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirteenth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has adopted a recommendation by the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) for the quadrennial staging of what will be known as The CARICOM Invitational Games.

The first games are set for 2009 after the Olympics in Trinidad and Tobago and will include as core sports, athletics, aquatics, netball and a maximum of seven other sports to be chosen by the country hosting the games.

Grenada to receive additional ICT support from India

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada (GIS) -- India's High Commissioner-designate to Grenada, Malay Mishra, has pledged his country’s continued support to Grenada in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

“India attaches great importance to her relations with Grenada,” he explained. “Under India’s Economic and Technical Cooperation Programme (ITEC), India has continued to assist Grenada in its capacity building in the IT sector.”

Antigua-Barbuda to embrace ICT-based knowledge economy

Accessibility to Information Communication Technologies ICT’s will determine the rate at which a knowledge-based economy will emerge in Antigua and Barbuda, expressed Dr Edmond Mansoor, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister responsible for Information, Broadcasting and Communications in an information society seminar recently.

University of Guyana launches Masters of Education Programme

The University of Guyana (UG) in partnership with Nova Southeastern University is offering a one-off Masters of Education Programme which will be effected through interactive classes at UG and online courses. The programme was launched earlier today at the Education Lecture Theatre, University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus.

Minister of Education Shaik Baksh during his remarks pointed out that the programme is being offered since Government recognises the need to build capacity and for training to be offered at a higher level to enable the education sector to move forward.

US ambassador pledges to continue literacy programme in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas (BIS): US Ambassador to The Bahamas Ned Siegel has pledged to continue the literacy programme in the schools that was started by his predecessor John Rood.

Siegel told the Minister of Lands and Local Government, Sidney Collie during a courtesy call on Wednesday, that the US Embassy also plans on taking the programme to the Family Islands.“Today I have my first reading at Woodcock Elementary at 11:45 a.m., and I already have my book picked out and look forward to reading to the second grade,” Siegel said.

Press statement by H.E Ambassador Stuart Leslie, former Chief Elections Officer, Belize, and chief of the CARICOM observer mission to the Saint Lucia elections

Good morning and thank you for being here today. Our delegation is pleased to be with the people of Saint Lucia and to serve as observes in the December 11th General Elections.

Our presence on the island is at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia; our mandate comes from CARICOM Heads of State and Government who instructed that an observer mission be present for these elections.

CARICOM observers for Haiti elections

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A six member team from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will travel to Haiti on Saturday 4th February, to observe the first round of next Tuesday’s presidential and legislative elections.

The team will be headed by Jamaica’s former Director of Elections, Mr. Noel Lee, and will include observers from other Member States.
