New ACS Secretary General to deliver inaugural reparations lecture

Saint Lucia will take the reparations message to the rest of the Caribbean next week when one of its foremost scholars will deliver an inaugural lecture in an educational series to be launched here on Wednesday.

The new Secretary General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) Ambassador Dr June Soomer will deliver a live public lecture on the topic The Reparations Movement: “A Ragtag Collection of Racial Malcontents Matching to the Beat of Their Own Drum.”

CARICOM SG elated over Bolt, Thompson 100m victories

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, has extended “heartiest congratulations” to Usain Bolt and Elaine Thompson on their respective victories in the Rio Olympics 100 meters races, noting that CARICOM was elated.

 “CARICOM is elated over this historic performance of Mr. Bolt who became the first man to win three consecutive Olympic titles at the distance.”

Economic recovery gaining ground in OECS – IMF

WASHINGTON, CMC – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says economic recovery in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) is gaining ground, supported by continued low oil prices, strong tourism arrivals, and robust citizenship-by-investment receipts.

The IMF said that three failed banks have been resolved with no spillovers to the rest of the region and fiscal management has improved.

IICA funding to develop Guyana’s Bio-inputs for agri sector

Guyana is set to become the first Caribbean country to be a part of the Competitive Fund for Technical Cooperation (FonTc) Bio-inputs Agricultural Project, funded by the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

 

CARICOM ACP-MEAs-supported International Congress on Biodiversity underway in Guyana

The fourth International Congress on Biodiversity of the Guiana Shield,  which has received funding from the Caribbean Community CARICOM through the ACP-MEAs project, got underway in Georgetown, Guyana, on Monday.  

The event is being held under the theme ‘Leveraging our High Endemicity, Cultural Diversity and intact Ecosystems for inclusive Growth and Secure Futures’.

CIMH and Sutron Corporation partner to help Caribbean nations build climate resilience

(Bridgetown, Barbados) -- National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) from across the Caribbean are now better equipped and trained to monitor climate in the region, thanks to a series of training workshops co-hosted by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) and international environmental and hydrological monitoring company Sutron Corporation.
 

Towards a new policy to shape the future of education in the Caribbean

When the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) launches its new Education and Training Policy and Strategy later in 2016, it will have had the input of some of the Caribbean Region’s key stakeholders. The Bank has undertaken a consultative process to ensure that the document, which will guide its funding and support for education and training in the Region, is aligned to countries’ specific needs. In addition to guiding the Bank’s development assistance to its Borrowing Member Countries (BMCs), the Strategy and Policy will take into account regional and global agendas on education.
