Hon. Dr Terrence Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, continues to raise the alarm about the increased instances of violent crime involving the use of illegal firearms in the Region. Dr Drew underscored this during the four-day Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (IMPACS) meeting, which began in St. Kitts and Nevis on Monday.
Addressing the CARICOM Crime Gun Intelligence Unit (CGIU) Sensitization and Awareness meeting, the Prime Minister noted:
The Republic of Suriname and the CARICOM Development Fund (CDF) signed two important financing agreements in Washington DC in the margins of the World Bank/IMF Spring Meetings. The agreements strengthen efforts to improve energy access and living standards in the interior of Suriname.

In the face of the widening digital gender gap, Dr. Carla Barnett, CARICOM Secretary-General has called for a redoubling of efforts to champion digital gender equality initiatives in the Region. She also recommended a reinforced determination to amplify the voices of women and girls in the ICT sector.
“We need to ensure that young people are enabled to be agents of change, with the power to shape a more resilient and sustainable future. This is critical in our CARICOM Region, where Youth are 60 per cent of the population.”
Our Caribbean Community is one of the biodiversity hotspots of the world, home to plants and animals that are found nowhere else. We are proud of that accolade and are steadfast in our efforts to manage and protect our biodiversity.
Greetings on International Girls in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Day 2024.
Statisticians from across the Region are in Guyana for a training programme on statistical data and metadata eXchange (SDMX). The workshop, hosted by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Statistical Office of the European Union (Eurostat), is being held at the Bureau of Statistics office in Georgetown. It began on Monday, 22 April, and will conclude on Friday, 26 April.
CARICOM Member States are encouraged to exchange experiences in the signature and ratification process of the new global treaty on the management of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions (BBNJ).
