One body found, eight other people missing following boating accident

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Rescue teams have recovered one body and are continuing their search for eight other people after two boats with at least 20 people on board collided in the Mazuruni River, Essequibo late on Tuesday. A government statement said that members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) had joined the Coast Guard and Infantry troops in searching the river following the accident that occurred at Crab Falls, 25 miles from Bartica.

Obama hope - Jamaican diaspora holds high expectations for immigration reform

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The next four years are being touted as the "grand legacy phase" for United States (US) President Barack Obama and some influential Jamaicans in the diaspora are suggesting that the signposts already erected by the country's 44th commander-in-chief augur well for their countrymen living in America.
As Obama prepared to deliver his second inaugural address, one expert predicted immigration reform that is likely to favour Jamaicans could be a reality within the next 18 months.

Some CARICOM countries trying to block Guyanese goods – Ramsammy

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy says some CARICOM nations have been operating less than neighbourly by putting up non-tariff barriers to Guyanese products. At a conference for stakeholders in the coconut industry last week he told those gathered that it was an issue the government has to tackle aggressively. “They study us more than we study (ourselves); they know exactly what we have so for example they want the CET (Common External Tariff) for sugar, they know exactly how much we can give them so they ask for more than that.

CARICOM leaders to meet in Haiti next month

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders will meet in Haiti next month, the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat announced Tuesday.
It said that the arrangements for the February 18-19 meeting had been finalised at the 31st meeting of the CARICOM Council of Ministers meeting here on Monday.

IRENA GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING

The Third General Assembly Meeting of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) was held on 13-14 January 2013 in Abu Dhabi, and the CARICOM Secretariat represented by its Programme Manager, Energy, participated as an Observer. Four CARICOM Member States were also represented, viz, Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Guyana, and St. Vincent and Grenadines.

Government denounces move by opposition to repeal benefits to former heads of state

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – The Guyana government has criticised the decision by the opposition to introduce legislation aimed at repealing the benefits afforded to former heads of state. A bill to repeal the Former Presidents (Benefit and Other Facilities) Act had its first reading in the National Assembly on Thursday and follows a promise made by the opposition grouping, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), during the campaign for the last national elections that it would seek to that it would seek to repeal the legislation.

Western diplomats call for Local Government polls in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Western countries Wednesday pressured Guyana to ensure that Local Government elections last held here in 1994 take place during the coming months.
In a joint statement issued by the United States Ambassador D. Brent Hardt, the United Kingdom High Commissioner Andrew Ayre, his Canadian counterpart David Devine and Robert Kopecky, the European Union diplomat here, the Western countries recalled that during the 2011 national elections “one issue on which all political parties were in full agreement was the need to hold locl government elections.’

Guyana preparing for international talks on banning mercury

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyana is sending a delegation to the fifth session of the Inter-Governmental Negotiation Committee in Geneva later this month where an international ban on mercury will be discussed.
The meeting is scheduled for January 13-18 and local stakeholders, including officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC), and the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) met here on Tuesday to finalise the country’s participation at the talks.
