CARICOM Ambassadors in New York Discuss Haiti Crisis with UN Secretary General Guterres

May 05, 2025

(Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - The members of the Caucus of CARICOM Ambassadors to the United Nations (UN) met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, on May 1 to express their concerns about the deteriorating situation in Haiti and to explore ways to continue to support the country as it attempts to stem armed violence and restore constitutional authority.

It was agreed that there was urgency in engaging with the relevant members of the Security Council to ensure a speedy decision on the UN Secretary General's proposal on how to support the current Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM).

Similar efforts were also being made by the Chair of CARICOM who had been engaging with the Permanent Members of the Security Council (P5) on addressing the crisis in Haiti.

The CARICOM Caucus also discussed the UN80 Initiative, which the Secretary General launched in March 2025. The Initiative is designed to overhaul the UN system to improve efficiency and streamline its functions. The review is expected to result in a major restructuring of how the UN works.

CARICOM Member States expressed their strong commitment to the UN and to multilateralism as the UN engaged in this necessary process of revitalisation and reform, in order to ensure that the priorities of the region were given full consideration in the reform process.
