On Monday, April 14, 2025, CARICOM Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Armstrong Alexis welcomed Ambassador Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary-General of the Organisation of American States (OAS), for a courtesy call at the CARICOM Secretariat Headquarters in Georgetown, Guyana.
Ambassador Mendez, who is preparing to step down from his role at the OAS, visited Dr. Alexis to discuss the valuable relationship between CARICOM and the OAS.
The officials underscored the importance of CARICOM-OAS partnership and discussed several areas of mutual interest aimed at strengthening their collaboration. Key topics included human resource development, particularly language training, agriculture, climate change and climate financing, crime and security, and digital technology training for Caribbean youth, including augmented reality.
Additionally, they underscored the need to provide continuous support to efforts towards a long-lasting solution in Haiti.
They also agreed on the need to update the draft Agreement between CARICOM and the General Secretariat of the OAS to ensure its continued relevance.
