(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General Dr Carla Barnett on Wednesday accredited a third Ambassador of the Holy See to CARICOM, underscoring the importance of deepening relations with the Vatican based on shared principles of peace, justice, and human dignity.
“We recognise the profound influence of the Catholic Church throughout our Region as a beacon of commitment to social justice, and the promotion of dialogue and understanding, especially on behalf of the underserved,” Secretary-General Barnett said as she accepted the Letters of Credence of the Most Reverend Santiago de Wit Guzmán, on March 19 in Georgetown, Guyana.
Dr. Barnett highlighted the Catholic Church's significant influence in the Region, particularly its commitment to social justice and dialogue.

Reflecting on the Catholic Church’s Year of Jubilee theme, "Pilgrims of Hope," she noted its relevance in a time of global uncertainty.
“As the international community faces an environment afflicted by an undercurrent of tumult and uncertainty, we are reminded of the necessity of remaining optimistic and resilient in the face of challenges. It is also necessary for all of us to do our part towards a more just and equitable future for mankind,” Dr Barnett stated.
Noting that the Vatican’s Jubilee emphasis on the rule of law, reconciliation, and solidarity, aligns with CARICOM’s core principles of good governance, democracy, and fellowship,” she expressed confidence that Reverend de Wit Guzmán will use his experience to strengthen the bonds of friendship between CARICOM and the Holy See.

The Secretary-General also extended the Community's best wishes for Pope Francis' continued recovery and good health, acknowledging his inspirational leadership, compassion, and courage, which inspires people of all faiths around the world.
In his remarks, Reverend de Wit Guzmán commended CARICOM's efforts in promoting political, economic and social unity, and its respect for cultural diversity. He also highlighted CARICOM’s role in protecting human rights and equality.
He expressed gratitude for the support Pope Francis has received from the Region during his health challenges and reiterated the Holy See's commitment to education, and fostering mutual respect and human dignity. Reverend de Wit Guzmán also pledged to dedicate his “energy and every available opportunity,” to strengthen cooperation between the Vatican and CARICOM.
