(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Dr Carla Barnett has congratulated the Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer and Britain’s Labour Party on the landslide victory at the polls last week.
In a message to the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Dr Barnett said the Labour Party’s win symbolises the trust the people of the United Kingdom have placed in Sir Keir’s leadership at a very challenging time.
The full message reads as follows:
“On behalf of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), I extend warmest congratulations to you and the Labour Party on your resounding victory at the polls in the General Elections held in the United Kingdom on Thursday, 4 July 2024.
The people of the United Kingdom, through their overwhelming support, have entrusted you with leadership at a very challenging time. These unprecedented times require extraordinary actions, and the leadership of the United Kingdom is crucial in addressing global issues.
The Caribbean Community highly values our relationship with the United Kingdom in areas including climate change and the needs of Small Island Developing States; ocean governance; the blue economy; trade; respect for human rights, the rule of law; and support for the Region as a Zone of Peace. We anticipate the continued collective desire to deepen our levels of cooperation and reinforce our partnership.
Please accept, my best wishes for a successful term in office and the assurances of my highest consideration.”
