Mar 05, 2024

The CARICOM Secretariat, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of Guyana, The University of the West Indies, and other partners, held an agricultural exhibition on the grounds of the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown, Guyana last week to raise awareness of the Region's agricultural potential as it makes progress to achieve the goals of the 25 by 25 Initiative. The exhibition was held on the sidelines of the business sessions of the Forty-Sixth Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM where the Region’s flagship initiative to reduce its high food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025 was a major topic of discussion. Chair of CARICOM, His Excellency Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana and lead head of government with responsibility for agriculture and food security, is spearheading the Initiative.

The exhibition in the Agriculture Village featured a wide variety of agricultural produce including root crops, green vegetables, and fruits; value-added products such as skin care items; and farming techniques and equipment. Visitors also had the opportunity to view video productions of youth and their contribution to the Region’s agricultural sector.
