(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Georgetown)  Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) H. E Edwin Carrington will hold discussions next week with Canada’s first Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), the Honourable Peter Kent.

The meeting will take place at the headquarters of the CARICOM Secretariat in Guyana on Monday 16 February 2009. It is expected to be wide ranging and will address issues of mutual interest. Among these will be the global economic and financial crisis; the Fifth Summit of the Americas which will be hosted by Trinidad and Tobago on 17-19 April 2009; a CARICOM-Canada trade and development agreement; and security issues.

In relation to the negotiations for a Trade and Development Agreement, the Community has from the outset reiterated the need for a strong development component.

The Secretary-General looks forward to meeting the Minister of State of Foreign Affairs of Canada, a country with which the Caribbean Community has had a long, friendly and productive relationship.
