Sep 25, 1998

The Government of The Bahamas has assured the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) that all necessary precautions are in place in the event of a hurricane attacking the country which is hosting the first and second legs of the Caribbean Youth Explosion on the islands of Eleuthera and New Providence.

The 96 delegates are at present housed in Camp Symonette, the designated hurricane shelter on Eleuthera, as they participate in the Commonwealth Youth Programme's Caribbean Youth Exchange which began on Friday September 18.

The Youth Explosion which was launched on Friday September 18 in Nassau consists of three events, the Youth Exchange, the CARICOM Youth Parliament and Workshop which is scheduled to begin in Eleuthera on Monday September 28 with the Parliament convening in Nassau on Thursday October 1, and the final event is the Caribbean Youth Summit sponsored by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) which takes place in Barbados from October 5-7.

The statement from the Government of The Bahamas indicated the camp is staffed by a contingent of 12 Defence Force Officers, eight Officers of the Royal Bahamian Police Force and staff of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.

Commodore Davy Rolle of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force and Mr Charles Beneby, Director of Youth toured the facilities on Tuesday and were satisfied with the measures and facilities in place in the event of a hurricane.
