BUREAU OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT EXPRESSES CONDOLENCE AT THE DEATH OF SIR ERIC GAIRY

The Bureau of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, meeting in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda, on Tuesday, August 26, 1997, expressed its deep regret to the Government and people of Grenada and the family of the late Sir Eric Gairy at the passing of the former Prime Minister of Grenada.

Sir Eric, affectionately called the "Father of Independence" in Grenada for his role in guiding the country from colonialism to Independence in 1974, has been a significant figure in the nation's political life for many decades. As the nation's first prime minister, he was one of the original signatories to the Treaty of Chaguaramas which established the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM).

The Bureau further acknowledged the work of one, who in his time made a meaningful contribution to the process of regional integration.

The Bureau wishes to express its condolences to the family of the late Sir Eric and the Government and people of Grenada.
