(Office of the Prime Minister of Canada) (On 20 May) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister of Barbados and current Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Mia Mottley, to discuss the latest developments in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The prime ministers exchanged information on the efforts within Canada and the Caribbean to fight the pandemic and protect the health, safety, and economic well-being of all citizens, especially the most vulnerable.

Prime Minister Trudeau recognised the devastating toll that COVID-19 is taking on CARICOM countries, often exacerbating existing vulnerabilities. The prime ministers expressed their shared conviction that the pandemic underscored the need for strengthened global leadership committed to building a fairer, more inclusive world for all countries.

The prime ministers agreed on the importance of continued close collaboration between Canada and Barbados and other CARICOM countries, including to foster international action that addresses the unique challenges faced by small island states around the world, such as vulnerability to climate change, natural disasters, and access to financing. Prime Minister Trudeau underscored the strong and warm ties between Canada and Caribbean countries and looked forward to future engagement with CARICOM leaders.

COVID-19 is a rapidly evolving global challenge. The Government of Canada is working closely with local, provincial, territorial, and international partners to minimize its health, economic, and social impacts in Canada and around the world.
