Erika relief properly managed – CDEMA Relief Specialist

Oct 19, 2015

A Relief Specialist from the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) has complimented the people of Dominica for their accountability and efficient management of post-Erika relief supplies.

CDEMA Relief Specialist, Captain Neville Wint

Captain Neville Wint, a relief specialist from Trinidad and Tobago, has been in Dominica since 27 August following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika. Captain Wint works with CDEMA’s technical support team to ensure that the aid received is managed efficiently.

I would compliment the people of Dominica because relief came in and is being accounted for down to me at the lowest level. There are accounts showing who received what,” Captain Wint told the Dominica Government Information Service (GIS) last week.

The GIS said that he complimented Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit for realising and taking action to prevent the economic slowdown which is customary in such cases when relief is being received. The CDEMA specialist said Prime Minister Skerrit moved to transition into recovery at a good pace.

He said, however, that relief efforts were not yet over and that Dominica still required support of the international community.

He revealed that Trinidad and Tobago was working to help the island restore its pre-Erika airport standards which included fencing and night landing as indicated by the Prime Minister.

Other relief efforts will take time, it requires a lot of engineering advice to rebuild better. This is a one in 100 year event; therefore thought should be given to reestablishing certain roadways and rebuilding in a  process which will mitigate this time of event at least for the next two generations, “ he said.
