Port of Spain, Trinidad, April 17, 2015 (CARICOM IMPACS) – CARICOM IMPACS in collaboration with US Customs and Border Protection (CBP)  will conduct training in Deception Detection and Eliciting Responses Training (DDER) during the period 20-25 April 2015  in Bridgetown, Barbados.

The training is designed specifically for Member States participating in the Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) which includes countries from as far north as Jamaica down to Guyana in the south. This exercise is intended to enhance the elicitation techniques of CARICOM border officials operating at ports of entry. Participants in the course will be taught how to detect deception as well as elicit responses in others through the application of behavioral assessments and interviewing strategies.

It is anticipated that at the end of the training frontline border security officials will be equipped with skills that allow them to distinguish genuine leisure and business travelers from persons seeking to engage in untoward activity in member states or who maybe traversing the Region to go elsewhere to participate in nefarious activities such as terrorism.

Significantly, today, Friday 17 April, twenty-one (21) Border Officials from St. Kitts and Nevis will conclude a week long course in International Passenger Interdiction Training (IPIT) which is but one of the several courses to be provided over the next 6 months. CARICOM IMPACS has been working along with its US counterparts since 2011 in providing both regional and national training to its border security officials all in an effort of making our borders that much safer.

The foregoing underscores CARICOM IMPACS’ continued commitment to seeking out opportunities with international organizations for both financing as well as expertise to help develop programs that deliver tangible benefits for our all our member states not only in the area of  border security but also for all other security concerns of our stakeholders.
