(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Deputy Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Ambassador Manorma Soeknandan PhD., will lead a CARICOM Secretariat delegation on Tuesday to talks with a team from Germany headed by His Excellency Stefan Schlueter, Ambassador of Germany to CARICOM. The visiting side will include representatives from the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation, the Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and the German Development Bank.
The discussion will be held at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana, and will review ongoing cooperation between CARICOM and Germany, and look to longer term areas of collaboration in keeping with the priorities of the Community. The Meeting will explore cooperation on climate change, the environment and sustainable energy.
The Government of Germany, through the GIZ has supported Regional initiatives in the energy sector for the past 10 years. The most recent intervention is the GIZ/REETA (Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance) Project which aims to fulfill the needs of the CARICOM Secretariat to further develop coordinated renewable and energy efficient policies. REETA will support CARICOM in implementing the Caribbean Sustainable Energy Roadmap and Strategy (C-SERMS) which CARICOM Energy Ministers approved in 2013.
In the area of health, Germany has been an important partner in the fight against HIV/AIDS through the Pan Caribbean Partnership Against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP).
