Statement on News Item dated 30 April 1998

Apr 30, 1998

In the edition of the Chronicle dated April 30, 1998, there is a report on the Front Page with the headline "CARICOM clerk held with cocaine".

The CARICOM Secretariat wishes to state that the accused referred to in the report ceased being an employee of the CARICOM Secretariat since March 31, 1998.

It is regrettable that although this information was conveyed to the relevant authorities at the Cheddi B Jagan International Airport Timehri by the Secretariat in response to a telephone inquiry on the afternoon of Wednesday April 29, 1998, the accused was still identified as a Secretariat employee in a published report.

The Secretariat would appreciate if greater care and responsibility were displayed in future by all concerned before the publication of such a report.
