CARIFORUM Capacity Building Intervention starts:  Youth investment, policies and prevention programmes, partnerships emphasised

The importance of investing in youth, including treatment and rehabilitation for those who are using and addicted to alcohol and other drugs, was underscored at the Official Opening of the Regional Adolescent Training Workshops on 4 February 2019 in Trinidad and Tobago. To this end, partnerships, relevant policies and adolescents’ prevention programmes, among others, were emphasised by speakers who represented the CARICOM Secretariat, Delegation of the European Union, Organisation of the American States (OAS) and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

CARIFORUM Drug Demand Reduction (DDR)

The Drug Demand Reduction (DDR) Programme was designed to respond to the growing challenges associated with problematic drug use, including illicit drug consumption and alcohol abuse across the Region. Implemented through four key Result Areas, the programme adopted a comprehensive and evidence-based approach aimed at strengthening institutional capacity, preventing drug use, and improving treatment and rehabilitation services—particularly for young people.

CARICOM draft Model School Drug Policy to be developed Workshop opens in Saint Lucia

More than 20 representatives from government ministries and non-governmental organisations in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are attending a regional workshop to develop a draft Model School Drug Policy. The workshop opened on 21 January 2019, in Castries.

The use of licit and illicit substances, including alcohol; inhalants; and marijuana has been increasing, particularly by students across the Region.

CARICOM and CARIFORUM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, in his remarks at the launch of the Tenth EDF CARIFORUM Crime and Security Programme, on 17 January 2017, in Barbados, pointed to the “strength of cooperation” between the European Union (EU) and the Caribbean.

Calling the EU a “long standing and staunch partner” in the Region’s thrust to attain sustainable development, Ambassador LaRocque said “its [EU] assistance has been crucial…”

This regional strategy outlines evidence-based approaches to reducing drug use and its social and health impacts in the Caribbean.
