Prince of Wales to visit Antigua and Barbuda, BVI, Dominica

Caribbean Media Corporation) LONDON, Nov. 15, CMC – Britain’s Prince Charles is scheduled to visit Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica and the British Virgin Islands for a first hand view of the widespread devastation caused by Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

During the tour, the Prince of Wales will meet members of the local communities and hear about ways in which they have been recovering .

Prince Charles is scheduled to arrive in Antigua and Barbuda on Friday.

Food Security: A Priority in Dominica

Tuesday, October 31, 2017 — It has been just over a month since the Eastern Caribbean’s ‘food bowl’ was left bare following a direct hit from one of the strongest hurricanes to pass through the Caribbean basin – Hurricane Maria.

Agricultural stakeholders in the sub-region, both private and public, are actively supporting efforts to ensure the future of Dominica’s agriculture sector through the replanting of fast growing crops paired with dedicated supervision and the use of quality fertilizers.

Caribbean storms show urgency of rethinking aid for small island states

A series of devastating storms in the Caribbean has highlighted the vulnerability of small island states, where a single hurricane can undo years of development and plunge prosperous households into poverty from one day to the next.

Hurricane Irma turned 90 percent of homes on Barbuda to rubble and left financial losses of USD 100-200 million. Hurricane Maria has knocked out power to the entire US territory of Puerto Rico.

Hurricane Maria could cost Dominica billions of dollars, says CDEMA

REGIONAL disaster management and relief authorities are predicting that it will cost Dominica several billions of dollars to recover from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, which struck the Eastern Caribbean island last week, killing an estimated 20 people and leaving the small island nation in devastation.

 

In the wake of the category five hurricane, there have been reports of persons desperately in need of food and shelter, while there have also been reports of security threats in the capital, Roseau.

What Dominica Needs

 

 

Prime Minister of Dominica, the Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, has appealed for all to join forces to mobilise to bring relief to Dominicans in the wake of the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

In an interview on Thursday on ABSTV in Antigua and Barbuda, he said that rebuilding the country will require everyone’s support, particularly the Dominican Diaspora.
