CARICOM MISSION LEOGANE GETS UNDER WAY IN HAITI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) As the Caribbean Community‘s (CARICOM) team in Port-au-Prince prepares to relocate to the town of Leogane, a Transition Mission is underway to facilitate the Community’s health initiative in Haiti.
CARICOM had identified health as the primary but not exclusive focus of the Community’s intervention in Haiti following the 12 January devastating earthquake. The Community’s intervention, which began on 14 January, was initially located in Port-au-Prince at two sites during the emergency relief phase.

More CARICOM Health Personnel for Haiti

Bridgetown, Barbados, February 11, 2010 (CDEMA) - CARICOM sends a regional eight member team of health personnel to Haiti. The team of specialists from Barbados and Saint Lucia left for Haiti today to begin two weeks of voluntary service. These individuals will provide emergency and specialized health care to earthquake victims and compliment the work of teams from the Sub Regional Focal Point Jamaica.

CARICOM IN COMPREHENSIVE DISASTER RESPONSE TO HAITI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) More than 300 persons from eleven Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States and Associate Members have so far been involved in the response to the devastating earthquake which struck Haiti on 12 January.
The Region’s initial response was spearheaded by Jamaica, the sub-regional focal point with responsibility for the northern geographic zone of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) which includes Haiti among its five countries. CDEMA is the regional response mechanism for natural disasters.

CARICOM HEALTH OFFICIALS MEET IN BARBADOS TO CONCLUDE PLANNING FOR HAITI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Chief Medical Officers within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and representatives of regional institutions will meet on Friday 22 January at the headquarters of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency management Agency (CDEMA) in Bridgetown, Barbados to conclude a draft plan for the Community’s continued Health Intervention in Haiti after the devastating earthquake of 12 January.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Government of Guyana through its Civil Defense Commission (CDC) today received a quantity of food and household supplies from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat to assist with the continuing relief efforts in the wake of massive flooding that has left unprecedented damage in segments of the country.

It is with pleasure that I welcome you to this Special Emergency Meeting and thank, in particular, the representatives from CARICOM institutions that have traveled at short notice to be with us today. While welcoming you, I regret, however, the reasons, which give rise to this Meeting.

STATEMENT BY H.E. MR. EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), AT A MEDIA BRIEFING ON THE FLOOD DISASTER IN GUYANA AND ITS AFTERMATH, 28 JANUARY 2005, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

On behalf of the Caribbean Community and on behalf of the Representatives of the Regional institutions who have been introduced to you, I wish to reiterate the expressions of concern and continued solidarity and support among the Member States of the Community, contained in a letter of 20th January 2005, from the Chairman of The Conference, H.E. Drs. Runaldo R. Venetiaan to H.E. President Bharrat Jagdeo, on the flood disaster and its aftermath in Guyana.

STATEMENT BY THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY SECRETARIAT CONCERNING THE FLOODING IN GEORGETOWN, GUYANA AND SURROUNDING AREAS, JANUARY 2005

Caribbean Community (CARICOM) CARICOM Secretary-General, His Excellency Edwin W. Carrington, now back from the United Nations Meeting on the Sustainable Development of Small Island States in Mauritius, today (Monday, January 24, 2005) met with the Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Lolita Applewhaite and staff to assess the impact on staff and operations of the Secretariat, of the current flood situation in Georgetown and surrounding areas.

CARICOM SECRETARIAT TO ASSIST HURRICANE-HIT MEMBER STATES

Secretary General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Mr. Edwin W. Carrington will lead a small team from the CARICOM Secretariat to Grenada on Friday, 10 September to assess the damage caused by hurricane Ivan which ravaged the island on Tuesday. While in Grenada, Mr. Carrington and team will speak to Prime Minister, Dr. the Honorable Keith Mitchell and citizens of Grenada with respect to the CARICOM Secretariat's support in the rebuilding of the CARICOM Member State.
